1.
rocket ships descending on a hidden quarry lake, martians on vacation, floating on the water. golden tendrils in their hair, eating chips and drinking beer. the little ones are swimming, the parents read a book. no work for a week, just time to read and sleep. golden tendrils in their hair, eating chips and drinking beer. swim suits on, and dirty feet, golden tendrils in their hair.

When the summer heat comes, I think of those days, a '94 Topaz in a cigarette haze. Stereo blasting, ice cold coke in my hand. Listening to the Smiths as only young people can. oh no, oh no I can't go back to that gate... almost 20 years ago, its still strangely unreal, going "nowhere fast," and forever feeling "still ill." Oh almost 20 years ago. oh no, I won't meet you at the gate. oh but "shelia took a bow," and the "shoplifters" got caught, you "ask" "how soon is now?" oh "stop me" just stop. I'm not going back, its not a symmetry gate, I won't "stretch out and wait."

Got a lot of shirts but my shirts don't fit, thought about sit ups for a little bit. Joined Salvation Army for the uniform, next thing I know i'm in a desert storm. living in a grass hut, living in a grass hut I'm not that old, but i'm not that young. I think we'll be alright living on our own. Plant a little garden, let the children play, Picking up frogs and digging in the clay. living in a grass hut, living in a grass hut... Oh Salvation Army, I want a piano. One for every room, one for every room. Play it in the kitchen, I'll play it in the bath. Pianos in the grass hut by the wooden path. Listening to the birds, the beetles and the stones. Living in a grass hut... Bury my bones... next to the grass hut.

This damn head of mine, I can't get the light to shine. Foggy like a valley morning, Blurry like a Loch Ness Monster. Motivation took a vacation... Starring at the corner of the yard, my brain needs a changing of the guard. Aching joints, arthritis in my back, when I go to work, my lunch is in a sack. Motivation took a vacation... This damn head of mine, I can't get the light to shine. Foggy like a Vermont morning, Blurry like a Loch Ness Monster. Motivation took a vacation.

lets make a record on the moon talk nasa into building us a room in a crater out on the dark side drums on a shuttle going on a ride and we'll go "la la la...de da" lets make a record on an iceberg in the arctic on top of the world the wind is blowing and the sun don't shine guitars in tents and words that rhyme and we'll go "shoo-be-do... whoa whoa whoa" lets make a record on a sailboat by an island with an active volcano keyboards only, electric beat drinking pimms in the tropical heat and we'll go "{electric beats...}"
6.
my pet rock rocky told me the other day, "i'm gonna see the world and i'll be leaving in the evening." he said he joined a band and as the sun dropped away, a rock band van took my pet rock away. oh rocky's living now in the heart of the crowd. drinking beer and wearing tights, rock 'n rolling through the night. I sit outside and wait for rocky's return. watering the lawn where he used to sit. I planted some trees and I planted a fern, wondering to the stars where my pet rock is. oh rocky come home, there's more important things than sleeping on floors and having one pair of jeans. oh rocky come home, there is so much to say. we'll sit in the sun and grill some steaks. oh rocky come home, oh my pet rock, my dear pet rock, come home.
7.
iowa... do the right thing. do the right thing. in 1946 a tidal wave, washed the sand away, big bone hooks, out on the beach, the ocean opened to the great reef we were trapped on island earth, whats our worth? onward to the sacred halls, like a barrel over niagra falls. do the right thing... iowa... sun in the cornfield, the smell of the pig farm. 2 legs 2 hearts, we are the major plot.
8.
its hard to find faith in the darkness i just want to find my nerves of stone i'm trying to shake the smokes... look at pictures of me as a young boy never would have known I'd have a problem trying to shake the smokes...

if HBO made a series of my life, there'd be scenes of my and my wife drinking coffee and reading books, making salad and the naps we took. sure i'd be nice to sail in ships, raise some goats on a mountain cliff. but don't you see? i'm happy either way, enjoying what is given to me day by day. if Michael Crichton wrote a book about me there'd be 3 chapters about drinking ice tea. walking in Chicago by the waves of the lake, and how our Ford Taurus could use some new brakes. sure I'd love to build a home in the trees, have 7 kids and raise some honey bees. but don't you see? i'm happy either way, enjoying what is given to me day by day.
10.
got so dark in the house we went out walking feet on the concrete window lights on the street we all try to hush the sounds push it right into the ground your dress on the grass we stumbled on the lawn time seals up the memories drinking beer under the street lamps, laughing in the midwest, laughing in the midwest oh the pretty buildings paint on the trimmings. if I had a sword, i'd make it out of light to help me get home.
